Jim Hall - The Cool School Of Jazz Guitar Poet!
Compiled & Edited By Steven Herron

Jim Hall was born on December 4, 1930 in Buffalo, N.Y. and as a child was surrounded by music. His grandfather played the violin, his mom the piano, and his uncle the guitar. It was his uncle who influenced Hall to start playing the guitar at the age of 10. His talent was quickly apparent and although it was contrary to union policies, he began to play professionally in regional dance bands at the age of thirteen. Like a lot of the true jazz guitar greats of the 1950s and 1960s, it was the recordings of Charlie Christian that initially turned Hall's interest to jazz.

Jim Hall's household moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1946. Having actually decided to make a profession in music he entered and later on graduated from The Cleveland Institute of Music. It was throughout this period that Hall ended up being aware of the gypsy jazz guitar genius Django Reinhardt. Reinhardt's recordings affected the subsequent development of his guitar technique. Not happy with the financial prospects of working as a guitar player in Cleveland, Jim chose to relocate to Los Angeles in 1955.

In 1958 drummer Chico Hamilton was forming what was to be the very first of his many exceptional jazz quintets. John Graas the French horn performer recommended Jim Hall to Hamilton. Hall got the job with exactly what proved to be one of the most successful and ingenious jazz groups of the day.

This association with Chico Hamilton was to be Jim Hall's initial step up the ladder to the top of the jazz guitar tree. At the end of 1959 he signed up with another extremely successful little group, The Jimmy Giuffre Trio. This trio was as just as ingenious as the Hamilton group. Hall received well deserved praise for his part in Giuffre's trio from jazz audiences and critics all over the world.

Now established internationally as a jazz musician of the highest stature, Hall was contracted to perform with leading vocalists including Ella Fitzgerald and Yves Montand. He likewise was a featured sideman with leading jazz artists including Lee Konitz, Ben Webster, and Sonny Rollins. In many cases he produced some historical and fine recordings with these performers.

In 1960 Hall moved back to New York city. For a while he worked as a studio musician which included a spell with the band on the popular "Merv Griffin Show". Once more back at the top of his career as a jazz guitarist, the late 1960s and early 1970s saw Hall at his creative best! Throughout the years since then, Hall has made lots of impressive recordings with diverse jazz musicians. He has actually appeared in live shows and recorded with bassists Ron Carter and Red Mitchell, trumpeters Art Farmer and Chet Baker, pianists Bill Evans and George Shearing, saxophonists Paul Desmond and Ornette Coleman, as well as lots of other leading jazz artists.

A number of these recordings feature some of the very best jazz guitar playing on record and definitely validate the title frequently bestowed upon Jim Hall, "The Poet of Jazz". He also recorded with a quartet led by pianist Andre Previn backing classical violinist Itzhak Pearlman as well as with The Kronos String Quartet. Jim was awarded the respected JAZZPAR Prize for 1998. He accepted the honor that included a cash award of around $30,000. at the JAZZPAR Prize Gala Concert in Copenhagen, Denmark on April 5, 1998.

Jim Hall is without a doubt one of the most inventive, prominent, and lyrical jazz guitarists in history. While Jim was at first associated with cool jazz and afterwards with be bop, he always had his own methodology in addition to a unique sound. A master of subtlety, he has over the years consistently created fresh concepts, used space brilliantly, and made every note count! Jim hall died on December 10, 2013 at the age of 83.
