Stefan GrossmanStefan Grossman has been recording, performing, and writing about acoustic fingerstyle techniques and styles for more than 40 years. At age 15 he started taking lessons from the legendary bluesman the late Rev. Gary Davis. He also learned music from records by Brownie McGhee and Lightnin' Hopkins. When Grossman was 18, he formed the Even Dozen Jug Band with guitarist Steve Katz, harmonicist/singer John Sebastian and pianist Josh Rifkin. The group recorded the LP Even Dozen Jug Band [out of print] for Elektra in 1964. At the same time, Stefan became more interested in his work as a blues researcher. During the period from 1965-1975 he studied and traveled with some of the legendary figures in the world of blues guitar-- Skip James, Mississippi John Hurt, Son House, Mississippi Fred McDowell, and other great black American bluesmen and songsters. From this experience Stefan authored his landmark five volume series for Oak Publications that presented these styles to pickers worldwide. In 1973 Stefan co-founded Kicking Mule Records to counter the shortage of good instructional guitar records and music. With a lineup of artists including guitarists Dave Evans, Ton Van Bergeyk, Happy Traum, Duck Baker, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn and Davy Graham, Kicking Mule has been instrumental in promoting and preserving the best in blues, ragtime, and contemporary picking. Stefan Grossman - Show Me The Way To Go Home - DVD
Fingerpicking Blues, Gospel, and Novelty
Songs. It doesn't get more fun than the tunes on this lesson! If you're comfortable playing an
alternating bass then these arrangements will help you expand your technique. We start with
the popular children's ring game "Green, Green Rocky Road" played in a dropped D
tuning. The playing is loosely based on
Dave Van Ronk's classic arrangement but we add more left hand movements. In the key of C we
explore two songs I learned from
Rev. Gary Davis. "Little Boy, Little Boy Who Made Your Britches" has direct lineage in
Piedmont children's rhymes. "There's a Table Sitting in Heaven" is a beautiful melodic
gospel tune. We close our lesson with two humorous tunes made famous via Hollywood films.
"Show Me The Way To Go Home" was the song sung in the movie Jaws as the shark was
closing in for the kill! It was written in 1925 and is a standard pub and bar song throughout
the English Isles and the USA. For our last arrangement we go further back in time with the 1907
instrumental "The Teddy Bears' Picnic". In 1932 Jimmy Kennedy added lyrics and this has
become a well loved tune known throughout the world. All the tunes taught in this lesson are great
to play at home, picnics, and get-togethers. Each tune is taught phrase by phrase and played slowly

Stefan Grossman - Jug Band Music For Fingerstyle Guitar - DVD
The good timey sounds of jug band music - infectious and
influential - have enjoyed popularity since its beginnings in the "spasm" and "novelty"
bands that developed in New Orleans in the late 19th and early 20th Century. Jug bands were playing jazz and
blues long before the music was recognized and labeled as such. Their instruments were home made in some cases,
or substitutions were found such as with a jug sounding like a tuba, or using a washboard for a rhythm instrument!
Music was made and created and invented, and new styles were developed. Jug bands played on all the Ohio and
Mississippi riverboat paddle wheelers and many of the southern night clubs. They were in vaudeville, on the
streets, and in traveling medicine shows. Two of the most popular and well recorded jug bands in the 1920s were
Cannon's Jug Stompers and The Memphis Jug Band. In this lesson I have arranged some of their songs for fingerstyle
guitar. I have also included the wonderful "Shine On Harvest Moon" which fits perfectly into the jug
band tradition. They're fun songs to play and sing. You'll probably recognize some of the titles and melodies
from the recordings of the Rooftop Singers, the
Grateful Dead and the Lovin' Spoonful.
Jug band music is close to my heart. In 1964 with my friends Steve Katz,
John Sebastian, Maria Muldaur, Josh Rifkin, Peter Siegel and Bob Gurland we formed the Even Dozen Jug Band.
Hopefully some of the fun and joy that I found in jug band music has been transposed to the fingerstyle
arrangements in this lesson. A detailed tab/music booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD. Each tune

has been called The Devil's Music. It can be played in many different ways. Each brings a different
dimension to this timeless musical form. In this lesson we travel the roads and byways of the
South in search of various approaches to translate this musical form to the strings and frets of
your guitar. From Atlanta to the Mississippi Delta, from New Orleans to Texas, this lesson presents
diverse and exciting fingerstyle blues techniques and styles. We explore the steady alternating
bass of Mississippi John Hurt's
"Ain't Nobody But You Babe" to the rough and tumble playing of
Son House's "Banty Rooster" in an Open G tuning. Barbecue Bob's melodic "Mississippi
Heavy Water Blues" with it's repeating bass line motif is rearranged to a partial Open G tuning (D G D G
B E) and combines the Atlanta blues sound with that from North Carolina. We get a taste of New Orleans
and a more sophisticated approach for the playing of the Ray Charles hit "Let's Go Get Stoned".
We end our journey with "Goin' Down Slow". A steady bass played blues in A with melodic lead
lines but played in dropped D tuning, a technique taught to me by
Mance Lipscomb. Each tune is taught phrase by phrase and played slowly on a split-screen. A

The blues ballad "Shining Shadows" played
in the key of C and using an alternating bass with sophisticated chord voicings. "Ms. Josephine Ayresis"
played in the key of D and was influenced by the playing of the great Bahamian guitarist Joseph Spence. When I lived in
Europe I was greatly influenced by the playing of Bert Jansch, Martin Carthy and John Renbourn. "The
Way She Walks" is a three part instrumental. The first section was written by Archie Fisher and taught to
me by Martin Carthy. I put together the second and third sections. "Snap A Little Owl" is a John Renbourn
composition with a steady walking bass played against a strong melodic lead line. Also taught are two
complex jazz oriented instrumentals. "Tightrope" and "Danish Drone" (also recorded as Kicking
Up The Dust) are both played in dropped D tuning and feature varying time signatures and complex chording.

Stefan Grossman was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 16,
1945 and originates from a very musical household. His cousin Stephen Grossman
is a saxophonist who has actually played with Miles Davis and Elvin Jones.
Another relative Harold Grossman is a trumpet player and professor at the
Berklee College of Music in Boston. Stefan's parents motivated him to persue the
guitar at the age of nine. He ended up being intrigued by the blues guitar after
hearing some traditional blues music in Greenwich Village.
In 1960 Stefan was convinced by a friend to study guitar with
ragtime blues guitar player Rev. Gary Davis who at that time lived at Claremont
Avenue in the Bronx. Rev. Gary Davis was without a doubt the single greatest
influence on Stefan's development as a guitar player and he spent months over at
Davis' home eagerly memorizing every ragtime and blues guitar solo that Davis
would show him. He then went on to study the country blues guitar styles of Son
House, Skip James, Mance Lipscomb, Fred McDowell, and Mississippi John Hurt. In
1963 he formed "The Even Dozen Jug Band". In 1965 Grossman produced what was to
be the very first of many instructional blues guitar books and videos. In 1966
he performed with the bohemian poet group "The Fugs" and later with a blues
group called "The Chicago Loop".
In 1967 Stefan Grossman decided to reside in Europe, living
for a time both in Britain and Italy. Over the next twenty years he went on tour
internationally with his Kicking Mule concert package. This in numerous ways was
a blues, ragtime, and mainstream jazz version of Norman Granz's "Jazz At The
Philharmonic". Stefan presented lots of the top blues, ragtime, and
fingerpicking guitar players of the day along with his own genuine country blues
guitar style. At the same time he created his Kicking Mule record label which
included many of the artists who appeared in live performance with him. The
Kicking Mule record company closed its' doors in 1979.
In the late 1980s Stefan Grossman went back to live in the
USA. Based on the East Coast he continues to play and write prolifically on all
aspects of the blues and fingerpicking guitar. His books and DVDs are currently
released by Mel Bay, Alfreds, and other leading publishers. His recordings are
readily available on the Shanachie label. Grossman also runs his own business
which supplies a large range of blues, ragtime, and jazz guitar music DVDs,
books, and CDs. Although primarily a blues guitarist and teacher, Grossman's
exceptional work in this field as a performer, business owner, and author
frequently extends into areas of the jazz guitar. In current years his Vestapol
business has released some essential jazz guitar live concert footage DVDs
including live performances of various legends of mainstream jazz guitar.
All in all, very few guitarists have actually done as much as
Stefan Grossman in transcribing, showcasing, and archiving the music of many of
the legends of country blues and ragtime blues guitar. Stefan was among the very
first guitarists, together with Happy Traum and Arlen Roth, to offer guitar
lessons through the mail via VHS videos. Together, the three of them created an
industry that enabled anybody to study various styles of guitar playing all from
the comfort of their home - regardless of where they live.
