Stefan Grossman
Stefan Grossman has been recording, performing, and writing
about acoustic fingerstyle techniques and styles for more than 40 years.
At age 15 he started taking lessons from the legendary bluesman the late
Rev. Gary Davis. He also learned music from records by Brownie McGhee and Lightnin' Hopkins. When Grossman was 18, he formed the Even Dozen Jug Band
with guitarist Steve Katz, harmonicist/singer John Sebastian and pianist
Josh Rifkin. The group recorded the LP Even Dozen Jug Band [out of
print] for Elektra in 1964. At the same time, Stefan became more
interested in his work as a blues researcher. During the period from
1965-1975 he studied and traveled with some of the legendary figures in
the world of blues guitar-- Skip James, Mississippi John Hurt, Son House,
Mississippi Fred McDowell, and other great black American bluesmen and
songsters.
From this experience Stefan authored his landmark five-volume
series for Oak Publications that presented these styles to pickers
worldwide. In 1973 Stefan co-founded Kicking Mule Records to counter the
shortage of good instructional guitar records and music. With a lineup of
artists including guitarists Dave Evans, Ton Van Bergeyk, Happy Traum,
Duck Baker, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn and Davy Graham, Kicking Mule has
been instrumental in promoting and preserving the best in blues, ragtime,
and contemporary picking. Stefan has played with bands all over the world
and has recorded numerous CDs.

This 2 Volume DVD set

his students that playing the guitar was easy. He would say that a piano player
has only two hands (the left
keeps an alternating bass while the right plays a melody) but a guitarist has

The blues ballad "Shining Shadows" played in the key of C and using an
alternating bass with sophisticated chord voicings. "Ms. Josephine Ayresis"
played in the key of D and was influenced by the playing of the great Bahamian
guitarist Joseph Spence.When I lived in Europe I was greatly
influenced by the playing of Bert Jansch, Martin Carthy and John Renbourn. "The
Way She Walks" is a three part instrumental. The first section was written by
Archie Fisher and taught to me by Martin Carthy. I put together the second and
third sections. "Snap A Little Owl" is a John Renbourn composition with a steady
walking bass played against a strong melodic lead line. Also taught are two
complex jazz oriented instrumentals. "Tightrope" and "Danish Drone" (also
recorded as Kicking Up The Dust) are both played in dropped D tuning and feature
varying time signatures and complex chording.

I have used tunings for many of my original compositions and in this
series I present seven compositions that show some of the possibilities that I
have discovered. The first lesson we delve into the open G tuning and the
original three part composition "Lullaby For Anna". This is followed by an
arrangement of The Carter Family’s "Working On The New Railroad". The Open Gm
tuning is one that I have long favored. It is ideal for many settings and in
this second lesson we look at three blues oriented instrumentals: "Capricorn
Five, Lament For A Goodman and Keeper Of The Vine". Our last lesson continues
our explorations into the Open Gm tuning with two blues suites: "Sparkling On
The Wind and The Three Kingdoms (The Vamp Of Oblivion)".
