Frank Vignola - Mainstream & Gypsy Jazz Guitarist!

Guitarist Frank Vignola is thought to be among the leading group of guitar players on the jazz
music scene today! Born on December 30, 1965 on Long Island, N. Y., he
began performing on guitar at the age of 5. As his abilities grew, he committed
a great deal of time transcribing and studying the tunes of legendary jazz
guitar players Django Reinhardt, Joe Pass, and Johnny Smith. Frank acquired a
spiritual kind of motivation from these guitar performers' recordings in
addition to making a detailed examination of the complexities of these guitar
virtuosos' playing techniques - slowing down his vinyl records to transcribe a
large number of solos.
Frank's very first instructor was his father, a
semi-professional banjo player. Later, Frank became the star student of
guitarist Jimmy George, who was one of the original members of "Dion and The
Belmonts". At age twelve, Frank took up the tenor banjo and quickly burst upon
the music scene in a way that would hint at the numerous awards that would show
up in his profession as a jazz guitar player and also as a teacher who would go
onto launch his own instructional DVDs and collection books of his jazz guitar
solos.
Clearly steeped in the standard school of mainstream jazz,
specifically during his formative years, Frank would ultimately take inspiration
from a substantial arc of the musical spectrum. Guitar players like Django
Reinhardt, Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery, and Lonnie Johnson are apparent
influential players, however one would be surprised to learn that rocker Jimi
Hendrix has also received the close up examination of Frank's analytical ear.
Louis Armstrong, Lester Young, Thelonius Monk, Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt,
Antonio Carlos Jobim, Thad Jones and Duke Ellington have all had an inspiring
impact on his guitar style! Frank attended the Cultural Arts Centre on Long
Island, N.Y. and graduated from there with honors. While he was studying there
he performed in a wide range of progressive rock bands and at the age of 15
Frank won a guitar contest backed by the McDonalds Corporation to appear in
their State Jazz Band.
