There are very few guitar pickers deserving of C.G.P.

Atkins certainly ought to know! And when Chet Atkins calls you "without a doubt,
one of the finest guitar pickers on the planet", you know you're doing something
right! Tommy Emmanuel has actually been doing several things right for over 4
decades, stunning audiences of musicians and non-musicians alike throughout the
world.
Like fellow guitar players extraordinaire Chet Atkins and
Mark Knopfler, Tommy Emmanuel appears to have that intuition when it comes to framing a
melody on the guitar fingerboard. His solo arrangements never ever sound clunky,
forced, or contrived. Rather, they offer the listener a crystal clear path into
the heart of the fingerstyle guitar solos he performs.
Born in 1955 to a musical family, Tommy started playing the
guitar at the tender age of 4. He was initially taught by his mother for the job
of accompanying her on lap steel guitar, however it didn't take long for his own
interest in the instrument to become apparent. Emmanuel can clearly recall the
very first time he ever heard Chet Atkins at 7 and it had a huge influence on
him. He invested thousands of hours trying to decipher Atkins' intricate fingerstyle
guitar style.
Before he was 10 years old, he had already accumulated years
of experience as a professional guitarist on tour with his family members,
playing throughout Australia. Tommy performed mostly rhythm guitar at that time,
while his brother Phil (likewise an accomplished guitarist) performed lead. The
brothers seldom attended school up until the time they were forced to do so by
the Australian Department of Education.
