George Benson - One Incredible Jazz Guitarist!
Compiled & Edited By
Steven Herron
In 1976 George Benson was voted, by way of numerous
pop music polls and jazz polls, as the world's
number one jazz guitarist! During that same year worldwide sales of his record 'Breezin'
passed the 2 million mark. Since that time George Benson has actually turned
into one of the most successful popular singers of the day!
The bulk of George Benson's current album sales are to a non-jazz audience
that purchase his recordings for his vocals as well as his exciting guitar
sound! Yet there is no denying that through these
recordings he has opened the ears of many of his fans to his first class jazz
guitar playing. As an outcome, George Benson has definitely developed an
interest in them to pay attention to other jazz guitarists!
George Benson's stepfather, Thomas Collier, was a fan of Charlie Christian.
He taught Benson how to play the ukulele at a very early age. By the time he was
8 years old George was already working in nightclubs
with his stepfather singing and dancing as well as also playing the ukulele. In
1954 he began to study the guitar, borrowing guitars at friends' houses and at
that point playing an electric guitar made for him by his stepfather.
George Benson Plays "Tenderly"
In that same year Benson made his first recording for a rhythm and blues
label. By the time he was 17 he was actually leading his own rock and roll band.
After hearing albums by numerous jazz musicians, including those of Hank
Garland, Grant Green, Charlie Parker and in particular the late Wes Montgomery,
George Benson was excited and ready to turn his musical
talents towards jazz.
In 1962 Jack McDuff, on the suggestion of Don Gardner,
selected George Benson as his guitarist. This association lasted for 3 years.
Playing with McDuff gave George Benson lots of beneficial experience playing with
top jazz performers. In 1965 he formed his own quartet promoting Lonnie Smith on
organ. After the death of Wes Montgomery in 1968, Benson was the clear choice
for record producer Creed Taylor to satisfy the gap at A & M Records left by
Montgomery's early demise.
Taylor prayed that George Benson's guitar sound, so much the
same at that time to Montgomery's, would also achieve popular success for A & M.
Creed Taylor's choice would turn out to be right, but the success did not come about
until 1976 when George Benson's Warner Brother's record 'Breezin'
surpassed the highest album sales that Wes Montgomery had ever attained.
A skilled and highly successful singer, George Benson's guitar style on his
popular recordings is actually a unique blend of jazz, funk, soul, and rhythm and
blues. Some of his recent recordings have a strong jazz element
and these reveal that George Benson continues to be one of the most exceptional
jazz guitarists of our time who can create marvelous single note as well as chordal
improvisations.
