Sheryl Bailey - 50 Essential Bebop Guitar Licks You Must Know! - DVD
Top recording artist, educator, composer, and
monster jazz guitarist Sheryl Bailey dug wide and deep into the bebop soundscape
to select the lines and approaches that comprise this essential vocabulary of
bebop phrases. You'll learn lines inspired by bebop giants such as Charlie
Parker, Joe Viola, Joe Pass, John Coltrane,
Pat Martino, Sonny Stitt, Cannonball
Adderley, Mike Stern, Dizzy Gillespie, Peter Bernstein, and many others!
"Learning licks from your favorite bebop players is key to understanding the
deeper harmonic nuances of the music. Organize your vocabulary of licks by
harmonic situations and then plug them into your solos. In time, you'll uncover
the harmonic and rhythmic shapes behind the licks and they'll become a part of
your own musical language. That's when you’ll really start improvising." As you
work through these 50 essential lines, you'll learn to apply the legendary "I've
Got A Banana" lick, minor 7th line cliche, chromatic below/diatonic above
approach, bebop scales, use of repetition, chord substitutions, chromaticism,
displaced rhythms, the 'micro-cosmic' bebop line, arpeggios, tensions, tritone
sub V7, symmetrical diminished, whole tone scale, augmented triads, 3-note
melodic embellishments, and many more bebop applications. All of the licks are
presented over a rhythm track and then broken down note-by-note,
technique-by-technique with a thorough explanation of the underlying harmony.
Everything is tabbed and notated, plus you get all of the rhythm tracks to
practice with by yourself. Guitar Lab's innovative learning systems employ a
hands-on approach where students "play" their way through the curriculum using
learning tools such as PIP video, practice rhythm tracks, and interactive tab
and notation, which allows the student to play along with the tab and notation,
at any tempo, without change in pitch!

Tom Wolfe - 50 Hard Bop Blues Guitar Licks You Must Know! - DVD
Wes Montgomery
is most widely known for the music he made during the 60's and for his signature approach for
improvisations, which usually began with single note passages, then an octave
solo section, finally culminating with a highly-charged chordal solo. His
seminal approach changed the landscape for ALL guitarists for ALL time. In this
collection, Tom Wolfe presents an extremely versatile vocabulary that not only
celebrates Wes Montgomery's contributions but also captures the stylings of the
blues and jazz guitarists that he influenced. Not only will Tom expand your
vocabulary, he will also reveal all of the underlying harmonic approaches and
techniques being applied: Major and minor blues scales, pentatonic applications,
applications for both the flatted and major 3rd, triplet ornamentations,
articulation, use of ghost notes, alternate fingerings, encapsulation, bending,
chromatic passing tones, ii-V lines, 6th intervals, octaves (of course!),
hemiola (the 3 against 4 feeling in a 4/4 time signature), tension and
resolution, color tones, pedal points, side-stepping, diminished voicings,
rhythmic intensity, syncopation, chordal soloing techniques and so much more!
All of the licks are presented over a rhythm track so that you can hear and
practice them in a musical context. Each performance is then followed by a
detailed breakdown of the line along with the techniques and harmonic approach
being employed to perform it. Everything is tabbed and notated, plus you get all
of the rhythm tracks to practice the lines with by yourself. Grab your guitar
and buckle up for this guided whirlwind tour back to the source of Hard Bop
Blues! Guitar Lab's innovative learning systems employ a hands-on approach where

take into consideration that you play guitar, and out pops a forgone conclusion

Django Reinhardt - Gypsy Jazz Guitar Innovator!
Compiled & Edited By
Steven Herron
Close to a half century
after his death, gypsy jazz guitar player Django Reinhardt still remains a
famous artist in the annals of jazz guitar! To this day, his scorching guitar
playing stands up to that of present day master jazz guitar players like Joe
Pass, Pat Martino, Tal Farlow and George Benson. Writer James Lincoln Collier in
his book "The Making of Jazz", referred to Django as "the most
astonishing guitar player in the history of jazz". When you consider the legions
of jazz guitarists he has encouraged, he may easily be!
His unprecedented method
of playing - combining European flavored licks and chords with jazz music
rhythms was unusual during his time. He was among the very first of the European
jazz musicians who could play the swing jazz feel the right way and he left a
historical footprint on the world of jazz guitar music. His major influence was
session guitar player Eddie Lang (the very first major jazz guitarist) and he
absorbed Lang's European based chordal approaches and took them one step
further.
Born Jean Baptise Reinhardt to LaBelle Reinhardt and Jean
Vees (his likely father) on January 23, 1910 in Liverchees, Belgium near the
French border line, Django was raised in real gypsy fashion - wandering around
in a caravan and living like a vagabond. Django did not go to school and was
illiterate - he could not read nor write. By age 14 he had actually turned out
to be a fixture on the Parisian club circuit and by age 18 he had cut his very
first record as a sideman, accompanying an accordion player on his banjo.
On November 2, 1928 personal disaster struck. Django heard a
faint sound and believed it was a rat playing around near his wagon. He took
hold of a lit candle, that unexpectedly fell from the candle holder onto a pile
of extremely combustible synthetic flowers that instantly burst into flames,
setting the entire wagon on fire. Django utilized a blanket to bring his wife
from the flaming wagon, but his exposed lower limbs and left hand were badly
burned. Because of the extent of his burns, physicians suggested cutting off
Django's legs, however he adamantly declined. He would later regain functional
use of both burned legs. His burned left hand did not have the same good luck
and his musical career was believed to be doomed.
Django was strong and determined however and plodded along,
trying to master the guitar again though still in the hospital. He finally
regained the ability to use his left hand thumb, index and middle fingers, but
not the total use of the 3rd and 4th fingers. Over a year later, he was able to
play guitar once again using his functional left hand fingers!
